About
oldsmithfield.com is a work in progress. It is an online exhibition of artefacts recovered from Old Smithfield Township on the Barron River near Cairns, along with primary source material about the history of the township and the neighbouring historical cemetery. The website is under construction and new pages, exhibits and historical items will be added as and when artefacts are identified, photographed, and their provenance has been established. Please check back regularly for updates.
The online display of archaeological artefacts is the result of collaborative work between the webmaster Dr. Dave Phoenix, local historian Scott McLeod, archaeology PhD candidate Sarah Collins, and the Cairns Museum.
The history of Old Smithfield township has been researched by Dr. Dave Phoenix, with assistance from the Cairns Historical Society, and the TropIntern program at James Cook University.
The webpages at oldsmithfield.com contain excerpts from the upcoming book Old Smithfield: Barron River township (1876-1879). Find out more about the book: HERE
