Lea & Perrins started in Worcester, England in 1837, when local chemists John Wheeley Lea and William Henry Perrins fermented barley malt vinegar, sugar and molasses for 18 months and sold the condiment as Lea & Perrin's Worcestershire Sauce.
Lea & Perrins sauce was imported from England - it was never made locally. George Raff & Co. and R. Armour & Co. were the Queensland (Brisbane) import agents. Bottles of Lea & Perrins were sold at Smithfield in the 1870s at a cost of 1s/6d a bottle or 16s/ per dozen.
